Each year, the Great Bay Stewards award college scholarships to outstanding high school seniors from the communities that surround the Great Bay. In 2009, there are two outstanding candidates we are pleased to name as our scholarship winners.
Karen A. Sternberger of Durham graduated from Portsmouth Christina Academy with a 4.09 GPA. Her major accomplishments include awards for short stories and poetry she has written, and a scientific paper presentation to the American Association of Variable Star Observers. Karen has developed a strong interest in pond life, conservation and the environment. In 2007, she conducted a self-initiated study of the living organisms in the Durham fire pond. During the summer in 2009, she will be participating in a UNH oyster research project. Karen will be attending the University of New Hampshire.
Noah J. Glennon of Greenland is a graduate of Portsmouth High School with a 4.15 GPA. He is an Eagle Scout who has assisted in clean-ups in his home town. He learned about sewage disposal concerns in the esturary, and helped educate his local community about the problem and the dangers it creates for health and the environment. Noah has completed a significant summer program on artificial intelligence (AI), for which he earned superior reviews from his instructors. He has also worked as a volunteer counselor at the Seacoast Science Center summer science camps, and has been a regular visitor at the Great Bay Discovery Center since he was a child. Noah is heading to Bowdoin College.
