Peter Wellenberger has retired from his position as Manager of the Great Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve (GBNERR).  He served as Manager for over twenty years.

Hired the June following the designation of GBNERR in October 1989, Peter had a hand in establishing the foundation of what GBNERR has developed into today.  As summarized by Kelle Loughlin (the Education Coordinator of the Reserve and the Manager of the Great Bay Discovery Center), Peter "transformed a ramshackle old house into the Sandy Point Discovery Center and over time, evolved the Reserve into the robust program and facilities that it is today. Working hard to expand positions and capacity, Peter maintained his persistence despite an often nebulous and confusing state and federal process. Starting as a staff of one, Peter leaves us with 5 full-time and three part-time staff members as well as a solid cadre of dedicated volunteers."

The Reserve is comprised of 7,300 acres of tidal estuarine waters and 2,935 acres of land surrounding the Great Bay Estuary.  Conservation land acquisition and the collaborative efforts of the Great Bay Resource Protection Partnership have been major successes under Peter's administration.

Since 'retiring,' Peter has accepted a position with the New England Conservation Law Foundation (CLF) to serve as the Great Bay-Piscataqua Waterkeeper under the auspices of the Waterkeeper Alliance.  Without a doubt he will remain a prominent figure in protecting and managing the Estuary, as well as a good friend and Steward.  The Great Bay Stewards would like to thank you, Peter, and wish you the best in your endeavors!

(As a side note, we are honored to have Peter join the Board of Trustees of the Great Bay Stewards.)
